Think about AI's impact on developers' lives the same way C affected assembly programmers. Just as we don't need to write an entire OS in 1s and 0s anymore, we won't need to write every line of code ourselves either. The jobs are still there, and the need to build things is still there. The tools and the level at which we work are just changing.

But that comparison cuts both ways. Programming is becoming what we used to know assembly as. The code is right there, but we have no idea what's going on underneath.

Still, zoom out far enough and none of this is new. We always assume the number of people needed to do a certain amount of work will decrease. But history tells us something else: the people stay, the tools change, and the amount of work becomes ten times bigger. Or something like that, generally speaking.

The only things that concern me are the current drug-like abundance of free models and tokens, and the possibility of providers raising their prices dramatically.
